Contemporary Music and Adventist Preaching
Yesterday I posted on contemporary music as a means to growth. Often connected to contemporary music is generic preaching devoid of who we are. Charles Bradford notes in his book Preaching to the Times that the Adventist church was "preached into existence."
Today, many of us are looking for methods of growth that are not in line with our own unique identity. But in the end, if you want to be heard, you have to say something worth saying.
Preaching our Message
On page 20 of Charles Bradford's book Preaching to the Times he states:
Seventh-day Adventist preaching should be distinguished by something different. It must bring to the present situation those insights and understandings that are found only in the prophetic portions of the Bible. All true Seventh-day Adventist preaching has Revelation 14:6-12 as its frame of reference...all sermons and doctrines wind up somewhere in the neighborhood of this threefold message.
Sabbath as Promise
Charles Bradford notes in his book Sabbath Roots: The African Connection that:
Sabbath is a promise of heavenly rest, a gift that brings with it a token or pledge of life in the escheton, the kingdom of God. It is God's future experienced in the now. A portion of eternity set in the midst of time.
Claiming the Promise
The Adventist Review has?an article for Black history month at http://adventistreview.org/2005-1506/story5.html.? In this series you will find an interesting post on some Adventists who actually marched even though PUC told them not to march in the movement.? I applaud the Adventist Review for telling the whole story including Central Adventist Church in Hunsville keeping blacks out at that time.??
Also don't forget to look at the profiles of Barry Black and Charles Bradford two leading preachers in Adventism.
