Thank you for helping us to reflect upon our roots. The reality is, if we do not know our roots we are basically without identity. I was first inspired to go to Africa by Dr. Rock with Operation Reach Back. I went and my life is changed. Ever since then I am trying to get in touch with him to continue my ministry in areas that need us most. I pray that we as African Americans will understand our deep responsibility and model the way. Thanks Dr. Rock, for the article and the commission to preach the gospel. I believe that because of our socialization, it is difficult for us to think blank. And by the way, thinking black does not make us superior or inferior to any other race, it just helps us understand ourselves more and encounter a deeper appreciation for who we are. In my opinion, black families would have been less impoverished if they truly understood their worth. They would have been less underprivileged if they understood their potential. I work in the social field and most of my clients are African American children. It breaks my heart to see how low they think of themselves. It is as if they were indoctrinated to believe that they just need the basics to survive and that there was no point in trying. Achieving heights is too hard. I realize that it is a hard concept for those of us who are color blind, but if we could just give ourselves a chance to learn more about our heritage, I am sure our lives will never be the same.

Brother Garland,

Thank you for taking the time to comment. However, I think that your comment shows that you misunderstand Dr. Rock's position. You seem to be under the illusion that Dr. Rock does not preach to anyone willing to listen. You also seem to imply that Dr. Rock does not love "everybody." You also imply that Dr. Rock does not preach the word.

However, Black preaching historically has made strides to preach to everybody, even when "white" preachers did not. In addition, it was the Black preaching tradition that held on to the concept of all being equal in the sight of God even when other traditions did not.

In addition, one of the most prevailing conceptions of Black preaching is that it seeks to be "biblical."
